Arizona Biltmore Celebrates 83 years
As the McArthur Brothers were preparing for the official Grand Opening of the hotel, they mailed out 600 invitations to potential guests across the country.
They were surprised & shocked when all 600 guests RSVP'd that they would attend ... the reason being, we only had 243 guestrooms at that time!
Their solution was to host a Grand Opening Party and repeat it three days in a row. This photo shows the gentlemen from the Arizona Biltmore Corporation (John Gage & John McAtee Bowman) holding the wooden key and the bouquet of roses that were dropped by the Scenic Airways plane that would fly over the hotel.
The key & roses were dropped down and an employee dressed as a Hopi Runner would retrieve the key & roses and present them to Mr. Charles Hervey, the General Manager. This was the ceremonial opening of the "Jewel of the Desert" and the beginning of a long & storied history.
